Künstlerhaus was founded in 1978 as an initiative of Stuttgart artists and has since developed into a contemporary art institution of regional and international significance. Focal points of the exhibition and event programming include the mediation of current tendencies in genres of art, architecture, design and theory, as well as the conjunction of local and international debates. In addition, Künstlerhaus hosts technical workshops accessible to members, and a studio programme. Künstlerhaus is located in the building of a former luggage factory in Reuchlinstraße 4b in Stuttgart-West. It is has four levels with 600 sq meters of exhibition space. Künstlerhaus is financed through the city of Stuttgart and additional private and public funds.
Programming Central to the exhibition and events programming is the presentation of young international artists as well as historical positions that are significant to current discourses.

The Umbau Raum von Nicolaus Schafhausen
The Umbau Raum was a project and service by Nicolaus Schafhausen, running in the years between 1996–98 at Künstlerhaus Stuttgart. Operating without a fixed timeline and only partially defined in use, it was a space with furnishings and objects by artists, serving as a library, workspace, living room, and hangout. Nicolaus Schafhausen is a curator, author and Director of Kunsthalle Wien. Since 2012 he has been the Strategic Director of Fogo Islands Arts, an initiative of the Canadian Shorefast Foundation. He has curated the German Pavilion of the 52nd and 53rd Venice Biennale, and in 2015 the Kosovo Pavilion. Co-curator of the 6th Moscow Biennale for Contemporary Art in 2015, Schafhausen is a Visiting Lecturer at HISK, Higher Institute of Fine Arts, Gent and Visiting Professor at HBKsaar, Saarbrücken. Schafhausen was the Künstlerhaus Artistic Director 1995–98.
