Initially formed within a small gallery as a response to the often destructive demands for „exhibitability“ from artistic production, the school has performed in many ways for many people, sometimes incubating new projects and collectives.

“The Public School Los Angeles is a space for radical communal self-education. It is free and open to everyone to propose classes, teach, or participate. We are part of an international network of free schools. The Public School is non-accredited, and is not affiliated with any union, political party, or the state educational system. Classes have no mandatory fees, and teachers volunteer their time, but we do collect donations.”

Aaaaarg.org
Aaaaarg.org is an online repository with over 50,000 books and texts. It was created by Sean Dockray and serves as a library for the Public School – an online platform that supports offline autodidactic activities. Aaaaarg.org has grown into a community of researchers and enthusiasts from contemporary art, critical theory, philosophy, and related fields who maintain, catalog, annotate and run discussions relevant to their research itnerests.

Sean Dockray
Sean Dockray lives in Los Angeles. He is an artist and a founding director of Telic Arts Exchange, a non-profit arts organization providing a critical engagement with new media and culture. Dockray initiated The Public School and AAAARG.ORG, projects that have taken on a life of their own and operate internationally. This year Sean has participated in the Encuentro Internacional de Medellin (MDE11) with Caleb Waldorf and Fiona Whitton and „Shadowboxing“ at the Royal College of Art in London. He is a co-chair of the Mobility Shifts conference at the New School and has recently spoken at the Townhouse Gallery in Cairo, the 29th São Paulo Biennial, „Properties of the Autonomous Archive“ in Bombay, and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. Dockray‘s writing has been published in Cabinet, Bidoun, X-TRA, Volume, and Fillip.
